Over 115 adult students earn their high school diploma through PSJA CCTA  

PHARR – A record-breaking 117 adult students from Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District’s (PSJA ISD) College, Career & Technology Academy (CCTA) graduated on Thursday, August 20, 2026. The ceremony took place at the PSJA Southwest Early College High School Auditorium. The graduates more than doubled last year’s graduating class, highlighting the impact of the district’s second-chance education program.  

Graduates ages 18 to 26 celebrated their accomplishments during a commencement ceremony surrounded by family, friends and educators who supported them throughout their journey. For many, earning their diploma represented more than completing high school; it meant returning to a goal they once thought was out of reach.  

Among this year’s graduates was Kenya Arias, who earned her high school diploma while completing a phlebotomy certification.   

“My first challenge was coming back to school,” Arias said. “I did not feel motivated to come back, but my family supported me. Overall, everything was easy; the teachers were great.” 

Many graduates are leaving CCTA with both a diploma and career credentials that can help them enter the workforce or continue their education.  

CCTA provides young adults with a flexible pathway to complete their high school education while preparing for college and careers. Students can recover credits, complete coursework, and meet State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) requirements while receiving support from teachers and staff.  

Through college and career partnerships, students can also earn college credit and industry-recognized certifications in high-demand fields such as welding, commercial driver licensing (CDL) and phlebotomy. Each student receives a laptop to support their coursework and plans.  

“A lot of our graduates completed their certifications through South Texas College, including welding, CDL, phlebotomy and other programs,” said Principal Belinda Garcia. “I encourage our students to continue their education. Don’t be scared. We are here to help you.”  

The record number of graduates demonstrates the growing demand for pathways that allow students to complete their education while gaining practical skills for their future.
